Most founders write their product copy fresh for every submission form. By the tenth directory the tagline has drifted, the description contradicts the landing page, and a twenty-minute job has eaten a weekend.

The fix is boring. Write every field once, at every length you will be asked for, and keep it in one file.

I run [Nick Launches](https://nicklaunches.com), a product discovery directory, so I see the same eight fields arrive in a hundred shapes every week. The ones that arrive clean were written once and pasted many times.

## The Eight Fields Every Directory Asks For

Submission forms differ in layout and almost never in substance. Nearly all of them want:

- **Product name:** Exactly as it appears on your site.
- **Tagline:** One line, usually capped between 50 and 80 characters.
- **Short description:** Roughly 150 to 200 characters.
- **Long description:** From 300 characters to several paragraphs.
- **URL:** With UTM parameters if you want to know which listings send traffic.
- **Logo:** Square, transparent background, at 512px and 1024px.
- **Categories:** Two or three, from someone else's fixed list.
- **Maker details:** Your name, a contact email, an X or LinkedIn handle.

That is the whole surface area. Write it once and the tenth submission costs the same as the first.

## Write Each Field at Three Lengths

The trap is writing one description and truncating it in the form field. Truncated copy reads like truncated copy, and it is the first thing a reviewer sees.

Write three versions of your description up front:

- **Under 60 characters:** For tight tagline fields and social cards.
- **Around 160 characters:** The most common limit, and the same length as a meta description.
- **Around 400 characters:** For forms that give you a real paragraph.

Do the same for your tagline at two lengths. Then nothing gets cut mid-sentence.

One rule for all of them: lead with what the product does, not with what makes it exciting. A reviewer scanning fifty submissions decides in seconds whether yours is legible.

## Assemble the Kit Before You Submit Anything

Put the whole thing in a single file, in the order the forms ask for it. Text, image paths, links, categories.

Then get your target list in the same place. These platforms are not equally worth your time. Our free catalog of [launch directories](https://nicklaunches.com/tools/launch-directories/) tracks 169 of them with the link type, traffic level, pricing model and niche on every row, so you can sort by what matters and mark each one as you go. Whatever list you use, sort it before you start rather than deciding directory by directory.

Two things to check on each entry before it earns a slot:

1. Whether the link is do-follow, nofollow, or gated behind putting their badge on your site.
2. Whether the category list actually contains your category. If the closest fit is "Other", skip it.

## Work the List in One Sitting

Repetitive work goes badly when you spread it over two weeks. Block a morning, open the kit, and go down the list in order.

Expect 5 to 15 minutes per directory once you count captchas and confirmation emails. With the copy already written, most of that is waiting rather than thinking.

Do this before your launch week rather than during it. Buildrship's 90-day founder playbook covers what the week itself should look like, and you do not want to be writing taglines on day one.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Should I customise the copy for each directory?

Only the categories, and only when a directory has a niche your product genuinely fits. Rewriting the description each time is what causes the drift.

### How many directories are worth submitting to?

Fewer than the big lists imply. Twenty you picked deliberately will beat a hundred worked through mechanically, and the ones that send real traffic are the ones whose audience matches your category.

### Does a listing bring customers?

Usually not directly. A listing is a page a crawler already visits and a small trickle of referrals. Treat it as a discovery path rather than a distribution channel and it will not disappoint you.

### What should I do after the listing goes live?

Check that the link points at the right URL and note whether it is do-follow. Then focus on the votes and feedback while the window is open, which Buildrship's guide to your first 100 votes covers in more detail.
